There were 17,009 unpaid carers in the 2001 York Census.

2007 - Frances Perry (City of York Council Carers Strategy Manager) surveyed 1,160 carers about carer’s needs in York. 245 carers responded, asking for: autonomy; recognition from professionals; representation on strategic planning groups & more social activities (amongst other things).

A series of meetings between Frances Perry (CYC), Sue Bradley (York Council for Voluntary Services) & an Interim Steering Group of 5 carers & former carers led to a new name: York Carers Forum in May 2008 along with, ‘Terms of Reference’; an ‘umbrella’ Logo and an email contact address. These carers & former carers are Unpaid Volunteers.

Working with Frances Perry & Kate Tayler (YCVS) the Steering Group developed a Constitution expressing charitable aims - this was adopted 16.06.08. The steering group became the ‘Acting Management Committee’ with 4 officers.

CYC Carers Strategy Group gave York Carers Forum a small Grant to set up their own administration, leaflets etc.

04.09.08 – York Carers Fourm 's Official Launch.

27.10.08 - first AGM officially elected the 4 Officers along with 2 new Committee Members.

York Carers Forum runs independently - manages a bank account; organises monthly Meetings, Socials & Speakers; produces a monthly Newsletter; carries out all administration & co-ordination; networks & liaises with other caring groups & organisations and sits on various ‘Caring’ Forums; Steering Groups; Strategy Groups etc representing unpaid carers.

4 York Carers Forum members are unpaid Trustees on the ‘York Carers Centre’ Trustee Board.

York Carers Forum aims to raise awareness of ‘hidden’ carers & empower all unpaid carers in York.

York Carers Forum aims to unite all caring groups to improve services & communication by sharing information & best practice and giving all unpaid carers a voice.
